Laiko

Laiko – Greek Restaurant in Northcote

One of my favourite reasons to travel is to sample foods that I didn’t grow up with. For years, I ate my way around the world. Most people travel through South East Asia and lose weight. I gained 10+ kilos on account of my sweet tooth and obsession with trying anything and everything I came across that was different or unusual. Of course, that was before I changed my diet to exclude animals.

Anyway, not everyone has the opportunity to travel overseas, and some people simply have no desire to. Luckily for them, and those of us who are between trips, we have some amazing restaurants right on our door step.

Take Laiko – a Greek restaurant serving authentic dishes, situated in Northcote, for example. I wandered in here the other day, well over due for lunch. Immediately I was greeted by Eleni, who loved my idea of hosting social events. We both agreed that sharing a meal brings people together. She introduced me to Bill, and the two of them told me all about their restaurant.

They are so proud, and rightly so. The décor is modern industrial – inherited from the former HIVE Bar and Grill. Vintage-style light bulbs hang from the ceiling. Fresh Singapore orchids invite diners to each table. There’s an absolute abundance of Greek sweets on display in the cabinets surrounding the register.

Laiko - sweets made in-house

The owner, Bill, tells me everything is made in-house. Busily prepping for the evening meals behind him in the kitchen, was a team of highly skilled, professional chefs who specialise in Greek cuisine.

Tables are perfectly arranged for groups to gather and share a meal. The menu boasts a massive selection of tapas style “Mezethes.” The deluxe banquet option which includes a seafood platter, catering for groups of four or more.

Spoilt for choice, I opted to fill my belly with “Yemista” – roasted stuffed peppers with lemon potatoes (vegan). The only downside of the dish was that I had no room left to sample the sweets!

Laiko ticks all boxes for me: local business, with excellent customer service, great atmosphere, delicious food, and a casual space to meet people and socialise. ORGANIC FUSIONS will be hosting events at Laiko, so if you’re keen to delight your taste buds with some Greek cuisine, pop on over to the events calendar to find out when. The best part? ORGANIC FUSIONS is free to join.
